The Forces of Lord Gloss: The Thunderscorn

Dragon Ogres have been around in Warhammer for a long time. Since the very early days I believe. However, to me, they have always been strangely out of place in Warhammer. In a world of dark and perilious adventure it seems a bit unwarranted to 'hail from thunder and lightning'.

But now, with the advent of Age of Sigmar, they actually seem to fit in with the world they're supposed to inhabit. Dragon Ogres are born and bred with gthe flow and ebb of great lightnings and probably only conceive during wild electrical storms... in other words, on perfectly standard AOS Tuesdays.

It says a lot about the new setting in my opinion. I would even say that when describing the new setting to someone frmo the outside, saying that Dragon Ogres are 'somewhere in the middle with regards to the level of fantasy crazy' would get you a long way.

Painting wise I have stuck to my previous scheme of gloss and blood. I have block in the colours, done a few crude highlights, and then splattered the models in various browns and blacks using a toothbrush, whereafter a coat of sepia wash (GW) and a final coat of gloss varnish has been used to seal the deal.

The bases were simply made using Agrellan Earth (there's an identical cheaper product, but I haven't gotten around to ordering it yet... and GW is available in walking distance from work.).

I add a coat of PVA before applying the Agrellan and seal it with diluted PVA when it has dried.

The Forces of Lord Gloss: Meat for the Grinder

Many mortal warriors seek fame and fortune by following the Rage of Lord Gloss

Painting units has always been more labour than fun for me... especially in fantasy when things were to go in ranks and be invisible, save the front rank. I am a skirmish gamer at heart and the whole idea of painting multitudes of sameish figures leaves me with a blank stare.

But in order to complete this army for Lord Gloss, I have to buckle up and get the meat ready for the grinder. As ever, I have taken the shortest possible route. Let's face it - if I were to paint this guys to any noticeable standard I would still be doing this come next spring.

The Despoilers of The Geographically True North

So instead I have doubled my game and pace and hammered through these units to get them to the table. It is ugly, when viewed up close, but I think it works well at the 1.5 m playing distance. I believe this is sometimes referred to as 'tabletop standard'.

The Despoilers of the True North

The recipe is completely without variation. I go for a 'Blanchitsu' look by keeping the palette simple and narrow... and then using whites, sepia, splatter and gloss varnish to get the job done. These late 90's plastics don't really have a lot to offer. The Chaos Warriors are particularly bad. I do remember how impressed we were with the set when it first came out though.

Morten and the Maraoudeurs

The marauder set is very very versatile and has literally been applied in thousands of different contexts over the years, from Post Apocalypse to Imperial Guard and what not. It must be one of the most successful plastic kits GW has ever done and I believe it is still on sale today. These turned out a bit more rough than I would have preferred but by any standard they are still OK for me.

My army now at a whopping 1140 points. The amount of units I still need to do does not look so intimidating anymore. Also I am at the point where I can actually start trying the game now... I wonder if it is any good?! Indicated in blood red below, for her pleasure, is the units that have been finished so far.

The Forces of Lord Gloss: Bob The Destroyer

No force is complete without a set of champions to aid their lord. Lord Gloss' army is no different and Bob The Destroyer has been the faithful captain of Gloss for centuries. Bob earned his title of 'the Destroyer' after raging through a Crystal City very early on in the Age of Chaos. The Destoyer left nothing but shards of broken glass behind as he smashed through the Crystal Ships as they were being filled. He killed a thousand girls and a thousand shrills and invented a millions new ways to die. He razed Crystal Palaces and toppled The Great Inverse Pyramid of Obnotha.

If you have been following my earlier posts on Lord Gloss' army then the painting on this model will offer you nothing new. It is speedily done and executed with a complete want of attention to details. Everything was blocked in...

...and then the colours where highlighted with increasing amounts of orange/white for the reds and just white in the base colours for the rest. The whole thing was then finished off with a GW Sepia wash and a coat of gloss varnish... interluded by some splatter from a toothbrush with tamiya clear red, black or brown.

I found this little model in my pile too and I think it would be a fitting Bob the Destroyer on foot. I haven't included it in the army though and as such it won't feature.

And finally here's the 720 points completed by now. As always the units there are done are indicated in blood red.

The Forces of Lord Gloss: Sniksnak's Murder Bouquet

Nothing says 'Khorne' quite as a pack of blood letters. And nothing says 'profoundly Middlehammer' quite as these 90's blood letters. They really have it all. Completely oversized weapons, banners, muscles and... well even the brass instrument is oversized! They were originally designed by Aly Morrison and Colin Dixon

The painting was done fast and swift as with the rest of this army. No surprises there. I basically gave them a good red overbrush and then drybrushed lighter and lighter nuances of orange and white into them. Once this basecoat was established I started washing them with orange and yellow glazes/inks and whatnot. Really a chaotic process without much chance of repeating it...

Unsurprisingly this was followed by blood and earth splatter tootbrush style ad nauseum, GW sepia wash and a thick coat of gloss varnish.

With this unit done I am now at 580 points of Chaos in the Age of Sigmar. Here is the list with the completed units indicated in blood red.

The Forces of Lord Gloss: Hoogie, Doogie and Loogie the Chaos Ogres

Thank you and welcome to this next installment in my ongoing travels through the Mortal Realms (TM). I have chosen to heavily modify a set of standard Ogres (Ogors?) to make them appear like they are heavily into Nurgle. Truth be told these conversions were actually made in 2004 or there abouts... and at the time it probably made sense as the ogres of Chaos could have the Mark of Nurgle or some such kerfuffle.

With regards to the painting I really tried to go all Blanchitsu on the dear boys. I hope this is evident. I decreased the palette to a few select colours, and applied them as glazes on top of a zenith undercoat made with black and white sprays. After this I added in more and more VMC off white to gain some pretty steep highlighting going. After that I added the metals, the rust and then a drowning coat of GW sepia. This was followed by a bit of detail work on the buboes - mainly just a yellow wash followed by some purple and tamiya clear red.

The dear old buboes in all their colourful display.

The background story for the three stooges here is not set in stone yet but I suspect they form a sort of mercenary pack hiring out their services to whomever is willing to pay in enough rotten flesh and rusty old swords to satisfy their appetite.
Or maybe they're on a whole other story... trailing through the realms until they find the garden of Papa Nurgle, joining forces with whomever they meet on their way. I think I like the latter.

Hoogie - the banner bearer. A beacon of hope, the symbol to which the ogors rally in times of despair. Hoogie sports a nice rotting banner which doubles as a habitat for his maggot farm.

Doogie has a single eye in the forehead much alike the plaguebearers of Nurgle. This obvious preference by the Lord makes him the natural leader of the trio.

Loogie is a brutish simpleton even by Ogor standards. He favours a club or rather a log, fitted with iron rims to bash out the brains of whatever comes in his way.

And there we have it. The Forces of Lord Gloss are getting nearer to completion. Listed as always is here the army list with completed units indicated in blood red. I have learned that viewers tuning in via their mobile units won't register the colours... unfortunately I can't really do anything about it.

The Forces of Lord Gloss: Arkmett the Terrible

'Akmett the Terrible was the only child of a Aqshyan bloodbanker and early on he found out that a day at the gory races of Fundabluda was really all he needed in life.'

The next installment in my ongoing to quest to make a 2000 pts Age of Sigmar Chaos army is this chariot. Akmett The Terrible is a merciless killing machine that rides out to battle under loud chants of Manowar or the Aqshyan counterpart.

As with all my units in this army the painting is terribly simple. Even you could do it! Yes you! First thing you do is you undercoat the model black... and then you simply block in the colours. Red on the red parts, bronze on the bronze ones... the black is even black already! All the more easy. Then you hightlight a bit here and there - don't be too delicate and make sure to exagerate a bit as we're going to dull the model with a bit of washing later on. I prefer pure white for the final highlights because it looks decent when washed with sepia aftewards. The colours I use are varied and generally I like a triad of VMC red, P3 khador highlight and VMC off white. Skin in this case is VMC medium flesh.

The whole thing is then drowned in sepia wash... in this case not the head though as I wanted the small plastic beads to keep their white diamond like sparkly. The head was from a necklace I found at a pound market. You know, some of that gothic tat that they're pushing together with Motorhead logos and Iron Maiden t-shirts and so on...

Finally the model was given a gory coating of Tamiya clear red and a generous splashing splatter with a toothbrush to create small dots of colour all over the thing. A final 'end it all' coat of gloss varnish and a nice agrellan earth base and we're done! Easy peasy!

As always I present here my armylist and the units that are officially done and documented are indicated in blood red letters to please the Raging God.

The Forces of Lord Gloss The Rageful

The Age of Sigmar is upon us!

Or at least... upon me. I have surrendered my hobby to the Games Workshop hobby life (TM) for the time being. Actually I am quite enjoying what appears to be deroute into speed painting realms of modern massive wargaming battles.

Lord Gloss The Rageful - his minions always tread warily on Mondays if the weekend has been heavy on mayhem and bloodflow.

Optimistic as ever I have based my endeavours on my present lead mountain. I have loads of old, but not old enough, Games Workshop figures. These figures are also known as 'middlehammer' as, historically, they were developed and produced in the period between the 'old days' of Rogue Trader in eighties and the 'new days' which seems to be quite recently... or somewhere around it.

Basically the models are among the first multi component plsatic fantasy sets. And while GW was an industry leader at the time, they weren't as capable as they are now. Many of the figures are clunky and the dimensions are quite frankly completely off.

To me they look a bit like old friends - I started at this point in the hobby and probably have a filter of 'good old' put in front of my eyes when I view them.

To get things started I have created a 2000 points armylist. I have decided to take the Stillmania approach and simply say that this 2000 points army is set in stone once it is painted. No new units and no changing... just gaming! And gloss varnish! The list can be split in two groups of 1000 points though. Just for a little flexibility. You can see the entire list at the end of this post. I will mark the units by highlighting them in blood red once they're done.

Now this shouldn't be about text and lists and yadayada all of it so let me show you the first two units I have finished for this army.

First up we have Lord Gloss himself. He is a 10' something bloodthirster and quite the ronkedor. For the last couple of centuries Gloss and his troops have been huddled up in a castle near the Worldgore Springs in what is considered a 'nice place to settle' by Aqshy standards. Since the coming of Sigmars sigmarines, however, Lord Gloss has had to dust of his battle axe and start working out again to keep up.

The painting style is totally sloppy. I decided this was the only possible way I could ever finish a GW army. So it painstakingly simple to explain: The colours have been blocked in, the whole thing drowned in sepia wash and then a few highlights and a generous tooth brush spatter of brown and black and blood. And lastly a thorough spray of gloss varnish. The red was painted using VMC red, P3 Khador Red Highlight and then GW Sepia wash. Bases are GW Agrallen Earthshade, fixed with PVA, drybrushed with P3 Rucksack Tan and VMC Iraqui Sand.

Now the gloss varnish may put some people off, but I have found that I absolutely adore it! So this goes on these old turds from now on.

I have been experimenting a bit with adding blood dangles. This is done very simply by glue on a bit of hair and then soaking it in Tamiya Clear Red or equivalent.

The Ent Tymes: Brewery Attack!

After a long time I am now back with a bit of fun gaming here. I was very fortunate to lure Jonas of deathworldadventures.blogspot.com and Daniel of Svendborg into playing a game of Warhammer with me. The scenario was one I had written and I expect to form a PDF book of the combined scenarious once we are through all of them. The setting revolves around the dwarven brewery of the Wyrm's Breath Brewery. Renowned for its ale that is said to cure anything from orcoid hairloss to the phallic dysfunction of an Ogre.

Here follows an account of our first battle - The Attack on The Brewery.
